Matthew Neubacher

Matthew Neubacher has been an active member on the “From Africa to Patagonia” project. Here Matt’s Collaboratory Story:

“Since I joined the Speech Production Lab through UROP, I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Sean Lang on his honors thesis research, which derives directly from the Collaboratory research that Sean started nearly two years ago. Investigating hesitation phenomena has been a very interesting introduction to research for me, teaching me about both quantitative and qualitative methods of conducting research. Although the work can be tedious at times, I am constantly improving my Spanish listening skills and learning more about linguistics.

One thing I have noticed about the lab is that even though each individual is busy with their work, team members are still very collaborative and willing to assist with both research-related and academic questions. This makes for a very organic working environment, where we can learn from each other as collaborators while also socializing as peers.

The ‘hot-seat’ experience of reviewing my work is also worth mentioning, as it offers me the opportunity to discuss my work with both Prof. Nick Henriksen and Sean. These sessions help me improve my Spanish listening skills as well as teach me essential research methods and techniques.”
