April 1, 2015 Seminar: Studio Chemistry at Cal Poly

Professor Alan Kiste (Cal Poly-SLO) provided a Wednesday afternoon seminar (4-5 PM, Rm 1640 CHEM) on his assessment work with the integrated lab/lecture/discussion (“studio” format) for general chemistry at his institution.

The most intriguing result reported was from a survey instrument that assesses students’  engagement of scientific practices. Although these measure went down over the term, they bounced up again after the break between quarters, and they observed this quite consistently over a 3-quarter longitudinal look at students as they went through this sequence.
