The Detroit Observatory is the second-oldest building still standing on campus. Erected at the direction of President Tappan in 1854 to help make the University of Michigan a top research university in the United States, the  Detroit Observatory has seen its fair share of major astronomical discoveries over its time atop the hill at the end of Observatory Street (which takes its name from this famous edifice). And as you walk up several flights of stone steps from Ann Street towards the fine Doric porch (similar to that of the President’s House from the same period), it is hard not to feel that you are approaching a true temple of knowledge and discovery.
