2019 Event Report
This year more than X alumni shared their expertise with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the event on August 1, 2019, the day before the Department’s Karle Symposium. More than 100 graduate students participated.
The day began with two concurrent alumni panels, one detailing industrial careers and the other focussed on academic positions. The industrial panel included Paul Bruno of ClearView Healthcare Partners, Zachary Buchan of Corteva Agriscience, and Kelly McDow of Procter & Gamble. The academic panel included Sara Buhrlage of Havard Medical School, Eli Fahrenkrug of Colorado College, and Jeremy Feldblyum of SUNY Albany.
A classic part of our event, mock interviewing and CV/Resume workshops provided experience and feedback on job interviewing skills for graduate students.
A new part of the event, URAN|UM (short for Undergraduate Research And Networking at UMich) was held successfuly. more than 30 undergraduates participated in the Industrial and academic panels, and attended undergraduate specific professional development events thoughout the day.
The reception and URAN|UM poster session rounded out the event, enabling undergraduates from UMich and local colleges to showcase the research they’ve been doing over their undergrad career. Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments were provided to welcome the alumni to a reception to mix, mingle, and network with former lab members, advisors, and current graduate students.
This year, the reception included the Graduate Student Awards and welcomed Prof. Adam Matzger as Grad Chair. The ceremony recognized students for distinguished teaching and research. Find a complete list of the awards and recipients on the Chemistry website.
The event was organized by the Chemistry professional career development organizations: CSIE|UM (Chemical Science at the Interface of Education at UM) and CALC|UM (Chemistry Aligned with Life and Career at UM) with the Chemistry Graduate Student Council (CGSC).
