FREEMAN D. MILLER

ACTING DIRECTOR 1960-61

Freeman Devold Miller was born on January 4, 1909 in Somerville, Massachusetts. He was educated at Harvard University, receiving a Ph.D. in astronomy in 1934. He served as director of the Swasey Observatory at Denison University from 1934 to 1940. Following his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Miller came to the University of Michigan as an associate professor of astronomy in 1946. He served as associate dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies from 1959-1966. Following Leo Goldberg’s departure, Miller became the Acting Chairman of Astronomy and Director of the University of Michigan Observatories. He returned to teaching and research when Orren Mohler was appointed Director in 1962. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a captain after 25 years of distinguished service. Miller worked at UM in his Astronomy Department office every day through age 90. He died on January 10, 2000.
