“Western Cliffs at Land’s End”

“Western Cliffs at Land’s End” (prelims)
by Jeffrey Catherine Jones (1944-2011)
12 x 17 inches, pencil on paper
Coppola Collection

I’ve had no luck searching out any more information than what you see here.

“Western Cliffs at Land’s End” (frontispiece) seems to be the title
“The Dreaded Moonlight” is an illustration

I thought that the depiction of the children was classic, classic Jones and worth having, probably/maybe (judging from the style) it dates from the 1970s.

“Blazing Sunset” (2004)

Jones was a great, great science fiction and fantasy artist, but it is her landscapes and scenery paintings that really catch me up. The strong and heavy impressionistic brushstrokes here give a compelling and animated dynamic to the composition that you just do not get with a more serene use of the medium.

“Angst”

Angst

28 x 28 in, oil and pencil on heavy board

“Stupendous” is perhaps the least I could possibly say about this ‘self portrait’ by Jones. She reported to Rob P that it was done while in the “grip of depression” (in the 1980s, Jones was between a divorce and the eventual gender transition that began in the late 1990s). She also said it was her ‘SCREAM,’ which is easy to believe.

Perhaps not too surprising, either: no digit image can do this piece justice.

“City of Fire and Gold”

This painting jumps to life when you see it. You want to turn around, as you peer into this window on the skyline, and find the source of the illumination. As a painter, Jones was a master at using color, and the placement of color, to carry the story she was telling.

Rumor has it that this painting appeared in the background of a movie.

“Red Sky” or “Red Palm”

RedSkyRed Sky” (2006) or “Red Palm” (2006)
by Jeffrey Catherine Jones (1944-2011)
18 x 24 in, oil on canvas
Coppola Collection

I bought this in 2006 from Jones, directly. I asked about it. This was the kind reply:

“In 1966, my wife and I honeymooned on Jekyl Island, an island off the coast of Georgia, and a beautiful animal preserve. Looking back this is my memory and interpretation of it (ca. 1994).”

This is one of my favorite all-time pieces of art. It is just stunningly vibrant. The inherent ambiguity of this draws me to it: it is a deep sunset or a nuclear explosion? I never know if I am supposed to be calm or upset, and I keep flip-flopping back and forth.

The eBay auction (2006) was titled “Red Palm” and a catalogue of her site records it as having been called “Red Sky.”
