Student Opportunities for AIDS/HIV Research is a two-year intensive academic and research mentoring experience to prepare students for graduate education and careers in behavioral and social science research on HIV/AIDS.

We are seeking applications from U-M students who:

  • will have junior standing in Fall 2022;
  • are interested in research focused on HIV in sexual and gender minority communities and communities of color;
  • are interested in attending graduate school.

About the Program:

During the two-year program, students will:

  • Engage in HIV-focused research with prominent behavioral and social science faculty during the academic year
  • Complete a short-term summer research experience or internship
  • Receive graduate school preparation support including a GRE-prep course in May after junior year
  • Take two required seminar courses cross-listed in Women’s & Gender Studies and Public Health:
    • Behavioral and Social Science Research in HIV: Methods and Perspectives for Sexual & Gender Minority Communities (Program Year 1; fall & winter terms)
    • Translating HIV Research into Policy and Practice for SGM Communities, (Program Year 2; fall & winter terms)

Eligibility:

  • Rising juniors at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor
  • Students who are interested in behavioral and social science research regarding HIV/AIDS in sexual and gender minority communities and/or communities of color
  • Students who intend to pursue a PhD in behavioral and social sciences (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Health Policy, Public Health, Anthropology, Political Science, Women’s & Gender Studies, Afro American Studies, etc. — not medical school)
  • We especially encourage students who identify as sexual or gender minorities, and those who identify as Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander; individuals with disabilities; and/or first-generation college students to apply.
