Student Opportunities for AIDS/HIV Research (SOAR) is a two-year intensive academic and research mentoring experience to prepare students for graduate education and careers in behavioral and social science research on HIV/AIDS.
We are seeking applications from U-M students who:
- will have junior standing in Fall 2022;
- are interested in research focused on HIV in sexual and gender minority communities and communities of color;
- are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in behavioral or social science (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Health Policy, Public Health, Anthropology, Political Science, Women’s & Gender Studies, African American Studies, etc.)

About the Program:
During the two-year program, students will:
- Engage in HIV-focused research with prominent behavioral and social science faculty during the academic year
- Complete a short-term summer research experience or internship
- Receive graduate school preparation support including a GRE-prep course in May after junior year
- Take two required seminar courses cross-listed in Women’s & Gender Studies and Public Health

How to Apply:
- Apply online by March 31, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. EDT
- Top applicants will be interviewed between April 11-22, 2022
- Decisions will be made by the end of April
- Admitted students will be invited to an orientation session in the spring/summer term
We especially encourage students who identify as sexual or gender minorities, and those who identify as Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander; individuals with disabilities; and/or first-generation college students to apply. |

Info sessions will provide more details about the SOAR program requirements and benefits, as well as a space to ask current SOAR scholars and mentors questions about the program and the application process. Current students and U-M faculty or staff who work with students are invited to attend an info session.
