Undergraduate Program

The University of Michigan offers one of the largest selections of undergraduate courses on Buddhism in the world. While most of these courses are taught through the department of Asian Languages and Cultures, other departments, particularly the History of Art, also train students in Buddhist Studies. A list of recently taught courses can be found here. Courses in Buddhist Studies can be taken to fulfill university requirements or as part of a major or a minor. The department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers a major in Asian Studies and a minor in the religions of Asia. In addition to courses on the histories, philosophies, visual cultures, and practices of Buddhism throughout the world, students also have the opportunity to learn the languages used in Buddhist scriptures (including Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan, Japanese, Korean, and Thai). Small seminars for reading Buddhist texts in their original language are available for students with advanced language abilities.
