Week 5: Astronauts in Training

Published Categorized as Camp Explorations

We had a great time training to become astronauts this week at camp! Campers were able to study our planets, design and pack their rockets, and launch their rockets into outer space.

On Monday, we explored the basics of outer space and learned all about planets in our solar system. We used inflatable planets to investigate the order of our planets and then created solar systems on a string (older campers) or solar system flip books (younger campers). Then, we headed to the Micro Worlds lab to explore the possibility of life on other planets. Campers tested three different soil samples to see if life exists on each planet. To close out a fantastic first day of camp, we completed a solar system escape room and saved the Earth from an asteroid!

On Tuesday, it was time to train like an astronaut. First, we created our own flag to bring to the planets we explore. Then, we headed outside for astronaut training. Campers had to complete a long obstacle course to be certified space explorers. To further prepare for our trip to space, we packed our bags and practiced moving and working in space. Campers completed four missions, all while wearing gloves and being tethered to the international space station. Finally, we created our own astronaut helmets and space belts, and we were ready to blast off!

On Wednesday, we began learning more about planets and how we travel to them. First, we built Mars Helicopters using Superdough and toothpicks. Then, we headed outside for the Mars Rover Races. Using remote control cars, campers practiced their navigation skills, simulating the process of exploring another planet from the International Space Station. Campers were also able to uncover the composition of a mystery planet, using “soil” collected from another planet. We made guesses about the possibility of life on this planet by looking for fossils. Finally, it was time to head to the planetarium, where campers were given a star talk about tonight’s sky.

On Thursday, we prepared for Friday’s rocket launch! Using 2 Liter bottles and our fantastically fun craft bin, campers broke up into groups to design their own rockets. It was so great to see all of their creative ideas come to life! Then, we practiced for tomorrow’s rocket launch using stomp rockets. We were also able to complete some target practice by using handheld rocket launchers and planet targets. This adventure was truly out of this world! Older campers then made a moon model while younger campers played Astronauts and Asteroids (sharks and minnows). After, we headed to the planetarium where younger campers watched Larry Cat in Space and older campers watched the Sun, Earth, and Moon show.

On Friday, it was finally time to head to outer space. After designing our mission insignias and doing one last test of our rockets, we headed to Palmer Field for our launch. Our oldest campers were able to help launch the rockets, which was so much fun! It took some teamwork to complete the mission, but it was definitely a success. After the rocket launch, we cooled off inside before playing some parachute games.

We truly had so much fun with your campers this week, and we hope they enjoyed becoming Junior Astronauts! If we won’t be seeing you for another session, please have a safe, fun, and relaxing rest of your summer.
