Week 8: ‘Ology’ Camp Questions

Published Categorized as Camp Explorations

Welcome to the final week of Camp Explorations for the summer of 2022. This week will be ‘Ology’ week. Every day we will be tackling a new field of science and learning all we can about various ‘ologies’. Here are some questions to ask your camper(s) at the end of each day.

On Monday, we will be talking about Geology. Campers will try their hand at rock identification (with help from our resident camp geologist, of course). We will be breaking our own geodes and even learning about earthquakes. Ask…

  • What did you find in your geode?
  • What was your favorite rock or mineral you saw today?

On Tuesday, campers will learn about the field of Paleontology. We start the day by talking to a real paleontologist about what they do and how they got to do such a cool job. Campers will bring out their creative side when they make triceratops hats and will be able to dig like real paleontologists in our dig box. Campers will even be able to take one fossil home with them. Ask…

  • What fossil did you find in the dig box?
  • What did you learn from the paleontologist?
  • To see my craft!

On Wednesday, we will be learning about Biology. Younger campers will visit a real salt life aquarium that is tended to by a university researcher. We will learn about how different animals live at different depths of the ocean and complete an activity related to these animals. Campers will also be able to paint their own sea animal magnet. Ask…

  • (younger) What kinds of animals did you see in the aquarium?
  • To see my magnet!
  • What are some of the names of different layers of the ocean?

On Thursday, we will talk about Entomology. Older campers will visit the salt water aquarium on this day. We will participate in a relay race where we will travel through the life stages of a butterfly. Campers will also be creating their own butterfly wings! Ask…

  • (older) What kinds of animals did you see in the aquarium?
  • What are some of the life stages of a butterfly?
  • To see my butterfly wings!

On Friday, we will be learning about Ecology. The day will start with some time in the Nichols Arboretum. We will be doing some animal yoga and also learning about the necessary components for every habitat.

  • What are some of the things that every habitat needs?
  • To see one of my animal yoga poses!
