Biography
Huang, Jiasi was graduated from the Peking Union Medical College. The Peking Union alumnus came to the University in 1941and received his Master’s degree in 1943.
Read moreJiasi Huang was born in the year of 1906 in Shangrao, Jiangxi province.[i] Graduated from the Peking Union Medical College, Huang later became the leading thoracic surgery specialist, and medical educationalist in China.[ii] Huang went to the University of Michigan Medical School in 1941 as a Boxer Indemnity Scholarship awardee (a scholarship program funded by Boxer Rebellion Indemnity Money that sponsored Chinese students to study in the U.S.), [iii] where he served as president of the University’s Chinese International Student Association.[iv] Huang graduated from the school with a Master of Surgery Degree in 1943.[v] Huang returned to China in 1945[vi] and became a professor at the Shanghai Medical College. During his position in Shanghai, Huang helped founded the Shanghai Chest Hospital and served as the first Dean of the hospital.[vii] After his appointment, Huang moved to Beijing, where he became president of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and president of the Peking Union Medical College from 1958 to 1983.[viii] Huang’s endeavor in his career as a medical practitioner and educator helped his country through the development of Thoracic Science and produced a significant number of thoracic surgeons for the country.[ix] His contribution to his country was also be recognized as a leader in rebuilding the medical science and practices after the strike of Cultural Revolution.[x] Huang died on May 14th of 1984 in Beijing, due to a heart failure.[xi]
Intellectual Influence
Huang pioneered thoracic surgery in China. He is renowned as a surgeon, and medical educator.[xii]
Read moreHis 1960 book, Surgery, is still used as a guidance and teaching materials until nowadays.[xiii] He was one of the founders of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering.[xiv] He is well-documented in the memoirs of his students and colleagues, who remember him as an experienced and prestigious physician and hardworking medical educator.
