Congratulations to Michael Meng (“Monuments of Ruination in Postwar Berlin and Warsaw: The Architectural Projects of Bohdan Lachert and Daniel Libeskind,”CSSH 59-3, and “On Authoritarianism. A Review Essay,” 59-4) on his new co-edited volume, Modern Germany in Transatlantic Perspective. Berghahn describes the book as follows:

Bringing together incisive contributions from an international group of colleagues and former students, Modern Germany in Transatlantic Perspectivetakes stock of the field of German history as exemplified by the extraordinary scholarly career of Konrad H. Jarausch. Through fascinating reflections on the discipline’s theoretical, professional, and methodological dimensions, it explores Jarausch’s monumental work as a teacher and a builder of scholarly institutions. In this way, it provides not merely a look back at the last fifty years of German history, but a path forward as new ideas and methods infuse the study of Germany’s past.

CSSH congratulates Alain Mikhail (co-author, with Christine M. Philliou, of “The Ottoman Empire and the Imperial Turn,” CSSH 54-4), the winner of the Humboldt Foundation’s 2018 Anneliese Maier Award. The award is valued at €250,000 and is granted to outstanding humanities scholars and social scientists who are nominated by collaborative partners at German universities and research institutions.
