Connecticut state lighting curfew

On June 27, the State of Connecticut passed a law implementing year-round lighting curfews for all state-owned buildings. It is the fourth state after New York, Illinois, and Minnesota to implement nighttime lighting laws to protect birds and reduce light pollution.

Light pollution is increasing globally at a staggering rate of 10% per year, especially in North America, according to a new study in Science (Kyba et al. 2023) that is widely reported in the media.

Oct 21 Night Sky at Belle Isle Nature Center

Visibility of satellite constellations

A new article in the Astronomical Journal shows that observers at 40 – 50 deg N/S latitude are impacted the most by satellite constellations, especially near the summer solstice.  Locations of the satellite constellations can be tracked on a free iPad/iPhone app.
