Ms. Estes White and her brother John Estes are African American siblings who grew up in the north end of the Chene neighborhood, just south of Hamtramck. They lived on a racially mixed street and the family was very active in the neighborhood. Their mother was the first African American woman who had a leadership role at the Boys Club on East Grand Blvd. They discuss the role of the Boys Club in helping the family children resist unhealthy activities. The interview was conducted in June 2014. An interview with their mother will be scheduled this fall.
