How to Respond with Empathy

Listen Tune out distractions and really focus on the other person
Process Identify the most important feelings and cause of those feelings.
Respond Choose a feeling word and describe the meaning of the event as you have
heard it. (Reflecting feelings)
“You feel _________because ________”
Example: “You feel lonely because other kids don’t play with you.”

Empathy means communicating your understanding and acceptance of the feelings and causes of those feelings that the person is experiencing. Communicating your understanding means that you show your understanding of their feelings by what you say and your attending skills. Communicating your acceptance of their feelings does not mean that you have to agree with what they’re feelings, it does mean that you let them know that it is understandable that they are feeling that way.
