At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, “Women in the Qur’an” course is currently taught by Professor Abla Hasan. This course guides students through a unique approach to the stories of the Qur’an and relevant literature by providing a detailed description of various texts and interpretations of the Qur’an. Students utilize these texts to learn about women’s rights in Islamic history and culture and are encouraged to critically engage with the materials.
There are around 15-20 students from University Nebraska-Lincoln enrolled in the class where students are joined virtually by 10-15 students Rutgers University and Dr. Jefri, a singular PhD student joining the from the University of Maryland. The class structure maintains a variety of activities, including debates and discussions. Through these dynamic mediums, students at all campus locations are excited about the curriculum and are actively enjoying learning more about the Qur’an and Islam. Many of the students are taking this course cause they would like to be more aware of culturally diverse issues within the Muslim community. Last but not least, they want to understand how women rights are dealt within in the Qur’an and other relevant texts. By understanding and respecting each other, each group, each religion, and culture, we can live all together in peace and love.
