The Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum (DISC) presents an annual Distinguished Lecture and supplemental lectures as part of its Global Islam programming series. DISC also co-sponsors Islamic Studies related lectures, events, and related activities at Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) institutions that coincide with DISC’s mission to develop a collaborative program of instruction in Global Islamic Studies.

Muslim Women’s Rulings: Issuing Fatwas in Indonesia

Weds, Jan 24th, 2024 | 5:00pm EST

In this talk, Dr. Nor Ismah explores the pivotal religious and community roles of Muslim women in Java, Indonesia, who assume positions as ulama (scholars) and religious leaders and issue fatwas, Islamic arbitration decisions. Their fatwas incorporate women’s perspectives and traditional and progressive Islamic textual interpretations, earning them religious authority comparable to male ulama. Despite gender constraints in areas involving authority over men, women ulama actively challenge male dominance in Islamic scholarship.

American Jedi: The Salman Hamdani Story (2023 documentary): A devout Muslim and proud American immigrant makes the ultimate heroic sacrifice. Like the fictional Jedi he admires, Salman Hamdani is ready to face adversity for the sake of others. On the morning of September 11, 2001, this young man takes a daring leap and runs toward the Twin Towers. When his body isn’t immediately found, his absence inevitably leads to questions–and suspicions. His family is forced to overcome tragedy and ostracization in response to their son’s death.

In this talk, Professor Ismail Fajrie Alatas of New York University, explores the relationship between religion and spatiality through a study of the emergence of a transoceanic religious geography that links Southeast Asia and South Arabia.

Dr. Ermin Sinanovic is the Executive Director of the Center for Islam in the Contemporary World (CICW) at Shenandoah University, where he is also a Scholar in Residence. Dr. Sinanovic’s research focuses on transnational Islamic revival, Islamist activism, politics of Southeast Asia, contemporary Islamic thought, and institutionalization of Islam in the Balkans and Southeast Asia.
