Summer Research Institute 2025

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum (DISC) Summer Research Institute (DSRI) is a 10 day fully funded research program designed to develop and expand undergraduate students with the broader field of Islamic Studies. The program will prepare them in pursuing advanced research or a graduate degree in Islamic Studies or incorporate Islamic Studies components into their current degree program as a possible minor.

DISC Summer Research Institute builds on DISC’s approach to teaching courses in Islamic Studies by providing students with a truly global perspective on Islam and the Muslim world. The DSRI will emphasize the theories, methods, and resources that encompass Islamic Studies so students can understand and contribute to broader intellectual conversations occurring in the field of Islamic Studies across disciplines. While students participate in a series of seminars, workshops, and individualized mentorships on the University of Michigan and University of Maryland’s campus, they will have the opportunity to engage in the distinctive cultural experience Southeast Michigan and the Washington, D.C. Metro Area has to offer.

To accommodate student’s academic training, two tracks are offered through the program: the Gateway track for students who are new or have just begun exploring the field and Capstone track for students who a familiar with the field and want to expand their knowledge in the field.

Gateway Track Participants will:

  • Learn approaches, issues, and research methodologies in the field of Islamic Studies
  • Develop a research prospectus
  • Gain the tools to be competitive in the graduate school application process

Capstone Track Participants will:

  • Advance their knowledge with research methodologies and managing projects
  • Access special collections and material, systems, and tools to further their research
  • Receive individualized mentorship on their research, thesis, or career path
