The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences welcomed 44 students from Cass Tech in Detroit for our inaugural Earth Science Day. Students spent the morning engaged in hands-on activities with students and faculty from our department.

They got a behind the scenes look at the Wooly Mammoth recently discovered just a few miles from here  in Chelsea, MI,

They extracted their own DNA and DNA from a strawberry in Professor Dick’s geomicrobiology lab

The made a map with a satellite image of U-M’s campus

They got to drink ice water made from 50,000 year old ice collected in Greenland

3 additional hands on activities – mineral identification, water acidification, and learning about isotopes and lake cores

It was a great day  – we hope to see these students at U-M as undergraduates in the future!
