We rely on the generosity of our alumni to provide a transformative education for our students. Your gifts will support diversity programming, fund student writing awards, enhance career development opportunities, and more. No gift to the Department is too small, and each one contributes to maintaining the standard of excellence that is the Michigan Difference. We thank each one of you—both those who have already given and those who are considering doing so.
The Chair of the Department and the staff of LSA Advancement would be happy to discuss any giving opportunities with you. The liaison officer for English in LSA Advancement is Janel Alpert.

English Journalism Internship Program
Through the English Journalism Internship Program, Alex Harring was an editorial intern for the Detroit Metro Times. He put his English major to work writing new stories and blogs, creating listicles, and coding web packages. Alex reflects: “Being interested in journalism as a career, my internship gave me the opportunity to experience journalism in a professional setting and better his writing. I am grateful for the English Department for the support and resources it supplied to make this experience happen.” Alex has since interned at CNN.
Hopwood Avery & Jule Prize
The Hopwood Program recognizes outstanding creative writing by University of Michigan students. Carlina Duan, a doctoral student in the Joint Program in English and Education, won an $8,750 Hopwood Prize for her poetry. As a graduate student, Carlina studies how creative writing can be more effectively taught in K-12 and university classrooms. In addition to her doctoral studies, Carlina has published two books of poetry.
Student Career Development Fund
With support from the Student Career Development Fund, Jackson Howard did an internship at the publishing house he grew up idolizing: Farrar, Straus and Giroux (FSG). He reflects: “I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without my English degree, and the skills I picked up at Michigan allowed me to learn on the fly.” Jackson was hired by FSG shortly after completing his internship, and has since been promoted to full editor.
