Fiona Lee : Professor of Psychology

Fiona Lee

Professor of Psychology

I am Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan, and also Associate Chair of Student Academic Affairs within Psychology. I received my doctorate in Social Psychology from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, and my bachelor’s degree in Economics and Psychology from Scripps College in Claremont, CA. I have taught many courses at the University Michigan, such as Introduction to Organizational Psychology, Human Behavior in Organizations, and Research Methods.

I was born in the United Kingdom, and grew up in Hong Kong. I have lived in Los Angeles, Boston, and have been living in Michigan since 1995. My background may explain my long-time interest in studying culture, bicultural identities, and how multicultural experiences impact individuals.

Before I became a professor, I was a management consultant. That experience sparked my interest in conducting research on social behaviors within organizational and work settings. I am particularly interested in behaviors that are difficult and risky, such as seeking help, communicating bad news, learning a novel skill, experimenting with untested ideas, working in a new culture, choosing a profession in which one is a minority, just to name a few. My work shows how organizational-level variables, such as culture, power, or values, can affect these behaviors.

I am originally from Minnesota and I am in love with my Golden Retriever named Little Bear.

I am a fourth-year Ph.D. student in Personality and Social Contexts. I study the effect of stereotypes and oppression on the well-being of Asian Pacific Islander Americans (APIAs). Currently, my specific projects examine (1) the role of the model minority myth in explaining why APIAs are not perceived as effective leaders in the workplace, (2) the role of internalized oppression for within-group othering/cultural policing , (3) how APIAs judge the cultural authenticity of other APIAs, and (4) the impact of internalized model minority myth and family pressures for weight loss on APIA women's body satisfaction. In addition to my research projects, I have a strong interest in survey methods and statistics. I am interested in the role of power and status in organizations. Given that power has the potential to yield both positive and negative outcomes in the workplace, I am especially interested in identifying personality and contextual factors that contribute to such outcomes. My research projects have explored perspective taking, identity management strategies, and attachment style as factors contributing to power decisions and communication strategies. I am also interested in the implications of various power strategies for subordinate outcomes, supervisor- subordinate relations, and overall organizational dynamics. I received my PhD from the Personality and Social Contexts area in the Department of Psychology, University of Michigan.
