RESEARCH THEMES
The Global Media & Communication Collective supports six main research themes, each led by a member of the faculty group. In addition to research conducted by GMCC faculty and students, we work with allied departments and area studies centers at the University of Michigan to sponsor speakers, conferences, and research projects on campus and around the world.

Media and Marginalized Identities research focuses on how those who are socially, economically, and/or politically marginalized as a result of multiple intersecting identities, including gender, race, ethnicity, class, place, and age, use various forms of media. GMCC members are especially interested in whether and how such usage can open up spaces for agency and empowerment.

Dis/Misinformation scholarship focuses on how problematic information emerges and circulates and interventions designed to address this issue. At GMCC, we are particularly interested in understanding the transnational flow of dis/misinformation and how this flow is informed by historical and contextual factors.
