Microbial Biogeochemistry

Decoding molecular messages to understand microbial controls on biogeochemical cycles

Welcome!

In the Microbial Biogeochemistry Lab, we study the connections between microbial ecology and carbon and nutrient cycling in aquatic environments. Microbes live in a world invisible to the naked eye, and many are unculturable in the laboratory. We use organic molecules produced by microbes to study their role in aquatic ecosystems, including the nutrient reservoirs they draw on, the metabolic processes they employ, and the biogeochemical conditions of the environment they live(d) in.

Our lab is committed to building a safe, inclusive and anti-racist lab group and department at UM, where everyone is supported in their personal and professional growth. You can see our department code of conduct here, and additional lab-specific policies can be found here.
