Los Angeles and Koreans

Los Angeles County is an important place for Korean Americans, with almost 300,000 out of 1.7 million Korean Americans living here in 2013, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Slightly less than half (46%) of the LA Korean population is male. There is a relatively even age distribution: 19% of the LA Koreans are minors (ages less than 18 years old) and 14% are seniors (ages 65 years old or older). Over 70% of LA Koreans were born outside of U.S. Overall, LA Koreans are well educated ─41% of the population has a Bachelor’s degree or higher. (In comparison, 32.5% of the U.S. population has a Bachelor’s degree or higher.)

Unfortunately, Korean Americans and our lives are not well understood because of lacking data sources. Often, data are not collected in Korean language and include very few Koreans, making it extremely difficult to obtain meaningful statistics. Hence, the policy is limited in incorporating our needs and aspirations.

Our goal is to collect data from a total of 400 Korean Americans in Los Angeles who immigrated to the U.S.
