Michigan and Koreans

There are almost 40,000 Koreans living in the State of Michigan as of 2013 based on the data published by the U.S. Census Bureau. About half (48%) of the Michigan Korean population is male. Michigan Koreans are a young population ─ over 65% of the population is 35 years old or younger. The majority of Koreans in Michigan are non-US-born immigrants. Overall, Michigan Koreans are educated just as well as the overall U.S. population with 33% of the population having a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Ann Arbor is one of the medium-sized U.S. cities with the highest population proportions of Koreans.

Unfortunately, Korean Americans and our lives are not well understood because of lacking data sources. Often, data are not collected in Korean language and include very few Koreans, making it extremely difficult to obtain meaningful statistics. Hence, the policy is limited in incorporating our needs and aspirations.

Our goal is to collect data from a total of 400 Korean Americans in the State of Michigan who immigrated to the U.S.
