In this video, two professors share their experiences using online discussions and the benefits the discussions have on student learning. Naomi Silver, a professor of writing, discusses how online discussions provide a medium for students to engage in low-stakes writing, so they can explore and reflect on ideas in a non-judgmental environment. Se-Mi Oh, a professor of Modern Korea, discusses what makes a good discussion question and guidelines for students posts. Both professors share how online discussions build classroom community and bring conversations back to the classroom.

Naomi Silver
Naomi Silver is Associate Director of the Sweetland Center for Writing, where she is also a faculty Lecturer IV. Her research focuses on reflective pedagogies, multiliteracies, and digital rhetoric. She teaches digital media courses in Sweetland’s Minor in Writing program; her current course, for the Lloyd Hall Scholars Program, is “Writing in Motion: Composing with Bodies, Words, and Other Media.”
Se-Mi Oh
Se-Mi Oh is Assistant Professor of Modern Korea for the Asian Languages and Cultures Department at the University of Michigan. Se-Mi teaches cultural history and cultural studies of modern and contemporary Korea, as well as undergraduate courses on the history of modern and contemporary Korea, Korean films, urban practices in Korea, and North Korean visual cultures.
