FAQs

How much is the application fee?
There is no application fee.

How much is tuition for the Institute?
The Institute covers the cost of tuition for each person accepted to the program.

How much will accommodations cost?
Nothing! We will provide accommodations at a local hotel and transportation to and from the Institute every day. We will also provide breakfast and lunch every day of the Institute (Mon-Fri).

I am interested in LGBT Psychology and research, but was trained in another discipline, can I still apply?
Yes. So long as you have a substantive interest in LGBT psychology and research, you can apply. LGBTSI applicants, participants and senior tutors have included (and include) scholars from Anthropology, Political Science, Public Health, Sociology and Social Work. Just be sure to make your interest and qualifications clear in your application. Please note that you are most likely to be competitive for a slot at the Institute if you have a clearly defined interest or past experience in this area.

I am faculty at a University, but my highest degree is a Master’s/M.Sc. (or equivalent), am I still eligible?
Yes. Both faculty who hold Master’s and teach/conduct research as well as students in Master’s (e.g. M.Sc.) programs who show exceptional commitment to, or interest in pursuing, research in LGBT psychology will be considered for slots.

I don’t see my exact area of interest represented, what can I do?
Though we tried to achieve a balance of both breadth and depth in the topics covered, we are sure there are areas of interest that are not explicitly addressed in the scheduled program. However, there are lots of opportunities for you to share your interests with other participants and to discuss new research ideas! For example, the poster sessions and round-table conversations allow participants to bring and share their own research ideas and questions. Because we provide lunch each day, participants and senior tutors stay on-site to talk to colleagues, set up affinity dialogues and meet and network with each other.

When are applications due?
We have extended the due-date to March 15th.

Are there scholarships available?

The Society of Psychology of Women (APA Division 35); The Psychology of Sexualities section of the British Psychological Society; and The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI; APA Division 9) will each provide support for one applicant. There is also the Riley Carney Scholarship available for one applicant. Please see here for more information:  http://sites.lsa.umich.edu/lgbt-summer-institute/supporters/.

Rackham School of Graduate Studies, Women’s Studies Department, Psychology Department, and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan; The Society of Psychology of Women (APA Division 35); The Psychology of Sexualities section of the British Psychological Society; and The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI; APA Division 9); and Heather Carney (Riley Carney Scholarship).
