Performing Arts Technology

Performing Arts Technology is an interdisciplinary subject bringing computers and other technologies to the service of musical expression. PAT applies computer and technology resources to the art of music. Courses are available in computer music composition as well as recording.

Students most often fulfill PAT requirements with courses chosen from the following list:

  • PAT 201: Introduction to Computer Music
  • PAT 305 / MUSPERF 300: Video Game Music
  • PAT 472 / ARTSADMN 472: Business of Music

Each semester, SMTD offers a wide array of additional PAT courses, all of which are eligible to be counted toward music major and minor requirements. Please see the SMTD Course Descriptions page for more information about regularly offered PAT courses, and be sure to check Wolverine Access for information on current offerings and special courses.  PAT 201 is a pre-requisite course for many course offerings in the Performing Arts Technology department and is the typically treated as a gateway course.

PAT courses are very popular — To control enrollment, most PAT courses are waitlist-only courses. These courses will never appear as “open” on Wolverine Access, but interested students are encouraged to put themselves on a waitlist for the course. Near the start of the term, once all PAT students have registered for their required courses the PAT department will issue overrides to additional students from the waitlist until the class is full.
