Transfer & Study Abroad

Students sometimes switch between LSA and the School of Music, Theatre & Dance as their degree plans and professional aspirations shift. Students may also transfer to UM from other schools, sometimes music programs, to UM LSA.

Transfers from the School of Music, Theatre & Dance to LSA are known as Cross-Campus Transfers. See the LSA Cross-Campus Transfer Information Page for details. Students may choose to declare an LSA music major or minor after successfully transferring to LSA. Students who started their studies in SMTD are likely to have made significant progress toward the music minor or music major in LSA.

Transfers from LSA to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance require a transfer application because an audition is required. Students interested in exploring this option should contact the SMTD Admissions Office (734-764-0593; smtd.admissions@umich.edu) for more information. You may also stop by their office in 2290 Moore and speak with a counselor.

Transfers to LSA from outside UM require a standard LSA application for transfer students. See the LSA Transfer Information Site for details.

Credits
Students transferring from outside the University of Michigan will receive a customized course audit and equivalent credit and course titles will be identified.

Transfer Credit from outside UM
The LSA Music Advisor is not able to approve credit for transfer to UM. For information on having credit transferred, please seen the LSA Transferring Credits page. Once a student has confirmed that the course in question will transfer to UM, the LSA Music Advisor will evaluate the course to determine whether or not it can be applied to the requirements for the music major or music minor.

Most music courses that successfully transfer to UM can be counted toward the music major or minor as elective credit. However, a copy of the course syllabus is required in order to count a transferred course toward a specific requirement for the major or minor, such as the Introductory Composition requirement for the major or the Musicology area requirement for the minor.

Study Abroad Credit
Study abroad credit offered through UM and UM-sponsored programs is eligible to be counted toward the LSA music major and minor. Students should contact the LSA Music Advisor to evaluate study abroad courses to determine whether or not it can be applied to the requirements for the music major or music minor.
