Two Year PhD Fellowship from Two Sigma

Another new fellowship sponsored by a company trying to recruit Math PhDs to work in their research division: The  Two Sigma PhD Fellowship supports doctoral students pursuing a PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics and Finance/Econometrics.

From their letter to me:  “We are pleased to invite your faculty to nominate up to 3 PhD students for the Two Sigma PhD Fellowship program from your Department. Our goal is essentially to sponsor outstanding research in STEM fields and therefore establish a long lasting partnership between Faculty, students and Two Sigma.”

There is no obligation to work for Two Sigma during or after completion of the degree, and nor any guarantees of job there afterward. Still, this is a great opportunity for students interested in going into research in the finance world, because the company will offer each fellow a Two Sigma research mentor.

Students whose work touches on linear/nonlinear optimization, numerical analysis, financial mathematics, operations research, probability, differential equations, signal processing,  statistics, optimization, numerical analysis, machine learning, statistics, deep learning, big data, natural language processing, econometrics, finance will be most competitive for this. However, even if your work has nothing to do with these topics, you can apply.
Our PhD students (even one of our former professors!) are going more and more into industry research jobs like the kind found at Two Sigma. The data revolution has transformed the job market for math PhDs. This is not your advisor’s job market.

Check out the link here to see if you might be interested in this opportunity, or otherwise interested in internship or career opportunities at Two Sigma. Talk to your advisor about supporting you for this, or let me know so I can. We’ll try to put together a strong nomination package.
