Harvard is hiring a Math preceptor (teaching-focused faculty member) with strong mentoring skills, who will also help run their Emerging Scholars program. This is an excellent opportunity for recent or upcoming Michigan Math PhDs interested in an academic career with a focus on teaching and/or DEI issues. The position is for 3-years, and is once renewable, so up to six years.
[Of course, they are also hiring post-docs (which they called Benjamin Pierce Instructors) as always, but they’ve specifically targeted UM for this preceptor position, knowing our outstanding reputation for teaching calculus and mentoring.]See their message below. [Note: this was received today, so I assume they were not satisfied with the applications they received by their “hard deadline” of Dec 1.]
For the academic year 2020-2021 the Harvard Math Department is looking for a preceptor who will teach one course (a section of calculus) per semester and also work as a mentor/administrator in our Emerging Scholars Program. The Emerging Scholars Program has a home in the mathematics department and supports students (generally from under-resourced schools) who come to Harvard passionate about STEM and less mathematically prepared than many of their peers. It is a program of community, enrichment, and support. This would be a good match for a recent PhD with a passion for fostering diversity in STEM, organizational and community-building skills, and strong pedagogical skills. The job is generally three years once renewable. Below is a link to the advertisement for a preceptor position. One of the preceptor positions we hope to fill is specifically associated with our Emerging Scholars Program. Interested applicants should apply to the preceptor position and contact Dr. Gottlieb, Professor of the Practice in the Teaching of Mathematics at Harvard University (gottlieb@math.harvard.edu) if interested in more details about the Emerging Scholars Program.
