Academia to Tech: Advice from Luis Serrano

Luis Serrano (UM Math PhD 2010) offered insight and advice to fellow travelers considering a career change from academia to tech. Luis is currently a Quantum Artificial Intelligence Research Scientist at Zapata Computing, a Boston company offering positions and internships (although Luis himself is at their Toronto office and they also offer fully remote positions).

In case you missed his talk in our “Invitations to Industry” seminar, he has provided his slides. They tell a bit about his own path— after completing his post-doc in Montreal, he’s spent time at You Tube, Google, Udacity and Apple in both teaching and research roles before landing his current gig. He also overviews the types of jobs available to PhD mathematicians and some advice in how and when to pursue them.
