Students sometimes wonder whether it is advisable to take a break from their graduate studies to pursue something else. Generally, the answer is a resounding Yes! Students who spend a year or two working in the “real world” between their undergraduate degree and graduate education are often more organized, mature, motivated, and balanced. Sometimes military duty or family obligations force a break on students. Although longer breaks can present challenges, such as being much older than one’s peers or getting rusty on some skills, many students have navigated breaks and come out strong!
