Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan, with an affiliated appointment as Professor of Urban and Regional Planning. His newest book, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/mattlassiter-new\/books\/\"><strong><i>The Suburban Crisis: White America and the War on Drugs<\/i><\/strong><\/a>, was published by Princeton University Press in November 2023 and received the Urban History Association&#8217;s Kenneth Jackson for best book in North American Urban History. Essays drawn from <em>The Suburban Crisis<\/em>\u00a0have appeared in the special <i>Journal of American History <\/i>issue \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jah.oah.org\/projects\/special-issues\/carceral\/\">Historians and the Carceral State<\/a><\/strong>\u201d (2015) and the special <i>Journal of Urban History <\/i>issue \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0096144215589939\">Rethinking Urban America through the Lens of the Carceral State<\/a><\/strong>\u201d (2015). Lassiter is also the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/mattlassiter-new\/the-silent-majority\/\"><strong><i>The Silent Majority: Suburban Politics in the Sunbelt South <\/i><\/strong><\/a>(Princeton University Press, 2006, Politics and Society in Twentieth-Century America series), winner of the 2007 Lillian Smith Award presented by the Southern Regional Council. He is coeditor of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/mattlassiter-new\/myth-of-southern-exceptionalism\/\"><strong><i>The Myth of Southern Exceptionalism <\/i><\/strong><\/a>(Oxford University Press, 2009) and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/mattlassiter-new\/the-moderates-dilemma\/\"><strong><i>The Moderates\u2019 Dilemma: Massive Resistance to School Desegregation in Virginia <\/i><\/strong><\/a>(University of Virginia Press, 1998). He has published more than twenty <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/mattlassiter-new\/articles\/\"><strong>essays in academic journals and anthologies<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/mattlassiter-new\/graduate-advising\/\"><strong>advised more than thirty-five Ph.D. dissertations<\/strong><\/a>. Lassiter also has served on the boards of the Urban History Association,\u00a0<em>Urban History<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Journal of Policy History<\/em>, and is\u00a0currently an editor of the <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upenn.edu\/pennpress\/series\/POC.html\">Politics and Culture in Modern America<\/a><\/b> series published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/mattlassiter-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1230\/2020\/05\/Lassiter-Contact-Info-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-534\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lassiter is deeply committed to publicly engaged scholarship and is involved in a range of collaborative research projects and policy-oriented activities. He is co-director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/dcc-project\/csp\/\"><strong>U-M Carceral State Project<\/strong><\/a> (CSP) and is the co-PI, along with Heather Thompson, of its <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/dcc-project\/\"><strong>Documenting Criminalization, Confinement, and Resistance<\/strong><\/a><\/em> (DCCR) research initiative, which has more than 100 team members and has received a $2 million grant from the College of LSA&#8217;s &#8220;Meet the Moment&#8221; program for 2022-2027, building on the initial $500,000 major project grant from the U-M Humanities Collaboratory for 2019-2022. He is the director and primary investigator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/dcc-project\/policing-social-justice-historylab\/\"><strong>Policing and Social Justice HistoryLa<\/strong><strong>b<\/strong><\/a>, a CSP-affiliated project launched in summer 2018 that involves undergraduate and graduate students in research projects to excavate and publicize histories of police violence and misconduct in Detroit and Southeast Michigan&#8211;most notably through the website exhibit <a href=\"https:\/\/policing.umhistorylabs.lsa.umich.edu\/s\/detroitunderfire\/page\/home\"><strong><em>Detroit Under Fire: Police Violence, Crime Politics, and the Struggle for Racial Justice in the Civil Rights Era<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2021). He is also the founder and coordinator of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/environ-historylab\/\">Environmental Justice HistoryLab<\/a><\/strong>, a research partnership with the Ann Arbor-based Ecology Center to document the history of environmental justice and sustainability campaigns in Michigan. He has led undergraduate research teams in the creation of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/mattlassiter-new\/digital-projects\/\"><strong>seven book-length digital exhibits<\/strong><\/a> on topics including the anti-Vietnam War, anti-apartheid, and anti-sweatshop movements at the University of Michigan; the history of environmental activism in Ann Arbor and the state of Michigan; and the history of policing and community responses in Detroit. In 2021, the National Historical Landmarks Program released Lassiter\u2019s theme study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/nationalhistoriclandmarks\/upload\/Civil_Rights_Housing_NHL_Theme_Study_revisedfinal.pdf\"><strong><i>Civil Rights in America: The History of Racial Discrimination in Housing in the United States, 1866-1975<\/i><\/strong><\/a>, a book-length report designed to inform the designation of historically significant sites. He also has published historically informed <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.lsa.umich.edu\/mattlassiter-new\/commentary\/\"><strong>political commentary<\/strong><\/a> in the <i>New York Times<\/i>, <i>Washington Post<\/i>, <em>Boston Review<\/em>,&nbsp;<i>Dissent<\/i>, and other public forums.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Home Matthew (Matt) Lassiter is Louis Evans Professor of History and Arthur F.
