The October 11th hybrid Burnsfest Conference on Fostering Mathematical Connections with Africa and Medicine: A conference in honor of Dan Burns, Professor of Mathematics brought together faculty, students, scholars and partners from across the campus and globe (in-person and online) to celebrate Prof. Burns’s extraordinary accomplishments throughout his career and explore future directions of his work.
Burnsfest, sponsored by MCAIM, the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (DCMB), the African Studies Center, the African Academy of Sciences, and the James Van Loo Symposium Fund, included a morning session on Mathematical Partnerships in Africa and an afternoon session on Mathematical Medicine and Biology. Seminar topics ranged from Leveraging on Science Networks to Build Strong Transdisciplinary Collaborations (Michael Nxumalo of the National Research Foundation in South Africa) to Mobilizing Mathematics for the Fight Against Cancer (Trachette Jackson, U-M Associate Vice President for Research – DEI Initiatives and University Diversity and Social Transformation, Professor of Mathematics).
