Welcome to MI Planets
An interdisciplinary exoplanet research initiative at the University of Michigan
- The Maze of Haze!Check out this feature article in Science this week, where Prof. Lia Corrales talks about her research group’s recent paper about how to produce tholins, organic compounds formed in the presence of UV radiation, with special optical properties that can explain features observed in exoplanet atmospheres.

Affiliated Research Groups
MI Planets is comprised of several affiliated research groups drawn from the Departments of Astronomy, Physics, Climate and Space Science, as well as Earth and Environmental Science.

Local and Regional Exoplanet Events
In addition to our weekly Journal Club, recent meetings held at UM include “Origins of Volatiles in Forming Habitable Planets”, “Multi-dimensional Mapping of Exoplanets”, and “The Great Lakes Exoplanet Area Meeting” (GLEAM) all sponsored in part by the Michigan Institute for Research in Astrophysics.

Research Facilities
In addition to a wide range of telescopic observational facilities, interdisciplinary research involves high performance computing clusters, high pressure laboratories for the study of planetary interiors, and laboratories for the development of space-flight hardware.

Fellowship Opportunities
We welcome potential applicants for the 51 Peg b and NASA Hubble Fellowship Programs. Additional opportunities to join our research community are afforded by the Michigan Society of Fellows, the Presidential Post-doctoral and LSA Collegiate Fellows programs, as well as the Michigan Data Science Fellows Program.

Research Opportunities for Students
Numerous research projects are available for students at all levels.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our field enables the very best science as well as promotes social justice.

University Partners
In addition to the academic departments from which our affiliates are drawn, we maintain strong relationships with the Michigan Institute for Research in Astrophysics, the Michigan Space Institute, the Michigan Data Science Institute, and many others.
