About Me

A native San Franciscan, I grew up eating lots of Chinese, surrounded by my Cantonese family. I became interested in Chinese history in 1992, when I enrolled in a class on early Chinese history with the late David Keightley at Berkeley. I then got the China bugĀ  and went on to receive a PhD in Chinese History in 2002. In 2015, I discovered my true passion: Chinese food. Since then, I have obsessively researched the foodways of China. I am particularly interested in the history of food in China before 1900, but I love it all.
