States – Michigan Quarterly Review

States

A mouth is a hole
that forgot it was a hole
and thought it was a god
instead of an altar
where we worship what we eat
and what body we have. What body
we have is stated. What states we have
are bodies. What bodies are controlled
by the state? It is not a question. It is not
a question. A state is not a god
for my body. A state is a mouth
that worships the holler. A state
is a mouth eating a mouth
that forgot it was a body
bodied by bodies
that god forgot.
