Daughter of two accountants, I tally

streets named for dead presidents who addressed
immigration like it’s a problem of pest
control—De, are you even listening to me?
Ah lui, he says, doke gum doh shu, so much school,
your brain is turning sour, crossed wires like bad
TV—Here, sit. Have some more faan from my plate
after you wipe your mouth remember to
save rice for Ma to eat after her grad
class wai dollar a minute for piano don’t be late.

Steffi Sin is a Chinese American writer from San Francisco with an MFA in Creative Writing from Arizona State University. Her work centers on family, inheritance, and the intersection of language and belonging. Her writing has been published in The Best Small Fictions 2022, The Kenyon Review, The Cincinnati Review, Black Warrior Review, and elsewhere. She now teaches English at her local community college.
