This undergraduate research project was conducted as an independent study during the University of Michigan’s Bicentennial<\/a>\u00a0celebration in 2017.\u00a0 It was sponsored by the LSA Honors Program<\/a> and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Katyanna<\/td>\n\n

Katyanna Guthrie<\/h2>\n

Katyanna Guthrie is a senior double-majoring in Psychology and English. She’s passionate about women’s studies and how women are remembered in public spaces, which sparked her interest in this project. When not researching, Katyanna likes to jam to Pink Floyd, play Dragon Age, and read urban fantasy.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"Summer<\/td>\n\n

Summer Hoffman<\/h2>\n

Summer Hoffman is a junior studying Earth and Environmental Science with a minor in Latin from St. Joseph, MI.\u00a0 She is passionate about the natural world and its history from the beginnings of the Earth, to classical antiquity, to where we are now.\u00a0 Summer was intrigued by this historical research project after a conversation in her History class about the naming of the buildings around campus.\u00a0 It made her wonder what these women did to deserve such a dedication, what a name represents, and how we come to choose them as the representative icons of our university.\u00a0 Her goal in the project is to give a story to the ones whom we, as students, mention so often, but don’t stop to think about.\u00a0 One of her favorite discoveries during research was an old pledge from World War I, found in the file of Mary Markley at the Bentley Historical Library.\u00a0 Her specific work entailed compiling research on these captivating women and writing biographies for many of the residence\u00a0halls listed on the site.\u00a0 She found it very interesting that many of the honorees we chose to research were connected.\u00a0 Moving forward, she is excited to be able to give her friends mini history lessons on the residence halls and she hopes that in the future this history could become incorporated\u00a0into events like freshman orientation.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Tadeo Yelos<\/h2>\n

Tadeo Yelos is a junior majoring in Computer Science.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Sophie B. Hunt<\/h2>\n

Sophie Hunt received her PhD from University of Michigan in 2017. She acted as supervisor, editor, and web designer for this project while Katyanna, Summer, and Tadeo were her students in the First Year Writing course History 195: The Writing of History.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
