Points to address in the application

When answering these questions, consider how your background and experience have contributed to your career interests.

Research

  • In addition to your primary field of interest in math and science, recount any ways that your research may contribute to understanding the barriers facing members of groups who have been historically under-represented in science and math in higher education. For example,
    • studying patterns of participation and advancement of women, racial minorities and other groups in academic fields where they are underrepresented;
    • evaluating research programs, curricula and teaching strategies designed to enhance participation of students from groups under-served by higher education.
  • Your potential to bring to your academic research the critical perspective that comes from your understanding of the experiences of groups historically under-represented in higher education or under-served by academic research generally;
  • Articulate how your research has the potential to serve the needs of groups that have been historically under-served by academic research.

Education, Teaching, Service
The selection committees will be evaluating your potential to contribute to higher education through your understanding of the barriers facing groups under-represented in science and math in higher education. You will want to include in your statement life experiences and educational background that relate to your understanding of this issue.

  • Examples include but are not limited to:
    • attendance at a minority serving institution;
    • participation in higher education pipeline programs such as Summer Research Opportunity Programs or McNair Scholars.
    • Academic service to advance equitable access to higher education for women, racial minorities and other groups in fields where they are under-represented
  • Leadership or significant experience teaching and mentoring students from groups that have been historically under-represented in higher education
  • Demonstrated significant academic achievement by overcoming barriers such as economic, social or educational disadvantage
  • Leadership or significant experience performing public service addressing the needs of our increasingly diverse society.
