Purpose

This policy exists to clarify the standards for redirecting faculty, lab, and minor program web sites’ URIs in the FLR project.

Review Condition

If the policy has gone at least a year without review, a review of this policy may be necessary.

Policy

URLs are of the form protocol://hostname/uri. This policy focuses on the URI component.

The policy for URI redirection is:

Internal — No URI redirection is enabled within the sites.lsa.umich.edu server. If a site changes its name, there is no server-level redirect or rewrite rule to direct traffic from the old to the new name. It is the responsibility of the site owner to notify their users of the new name.

Pre-Existing — If the site owner has a pre-existing site they are moving into FLR, adding redirection may be possible:

If the pre-existing site is inside a subdomain.lsa.umich.edu domain, the server- specific webmaster may choose whether to provide an override from the old URI to the new sites.lsa.umich.edu-based URI. The FLR team has no control over those subdomains and cannot set their policy.

If the pre-existing site is inside the lsa.umich.edu domain but not on www.lsa.umich.edu, the server-specific webmaster may choose whether to provide an override from the old URI to the new sites.lsa.umich.edu-based URI. The FLR team has no control over those servers and cannot set their policy.

If the pre-existing site is on www.lsa.umich.edu, a short-term redirect from the old URI to the new sites.lsa.umich.edu-based URI is allowed per their URI forwarding policy. The site owner must provide the source (old) URI, target (new) URI, the uniqname of a person to contact with questions, and an expiration date. That expiration date should be no longer than one year in the future.

If the pre-existing site is on www.umich.edu, the server-specific webmaster may choose whether to provide an override from the old URI to the new sites.lsa.umich.edu-based URI. The FLR team has no control over those servers and cannot set their policy.

Exceptions

The support team is allowed but not required to grant exceptions to this policy.
