Writer Asian Johnon on relationships with people on the outside: “In my personal experience it wasn’t hard for me to maintain my relationships with my friends and family. What makes it difficult is, if you’re having a bad day you can’t always just hop on the phone and call them..But that’s my experience and I know that I had friends who didn’t have any ties to the outside, who wished that they could at least get a visit once a year. It’s really difficult to live in a place that is every day trying to destroy relationships, and prison is successful in that destruction. You have to work at reminding yourself that you’re loved.”
