This course provides a psychological perspective on the experiences of Black people in America. It covers a range of topics relevant to the Black American experience, including prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination; gender-role constructions; racial identity; achievement and education; resilience and coping; and physical and mental health. Although the course draws primarily from the psychological literature, it also incorporate the literature from public health, public policy, sociology, and political science. Within these topics, an intersectional perspective will be employed to examine how race-related experiences are shaped by gender, social class, and sexual orientation as well as power dynamics and the social context.
