Planners are paying increasing attention to urban agriculture, but whether these strategies lead to gains in food justice remains a question. Synthesizing the research in the United States and Canada, co-authors and I identify many potential social benefits of urban agriculture. However, growing more food in the city will not, by itself, solve the many inequities in urban food systems. We argue that urban agriculture planning may even exacerbate existing inequities unless planners intentionally use a food justice lens.
