Tim Crews | “Can a sustainable food system be economically viable and equitable and ecologically sound?” – Sustainable Food Systems Initiative

Tim Crews | “Can a sustainable food system be economically viable and equitable and ecologically sound?”

“Can a sustainable food system be economically viable and equitable and ecologically sound?” Indigenous cultures around the world offer glimpses into how farming practices and local economies can operate within ecological constraints of particular regions. Dr. Crews will begin by discussing the agriculture of Hopi people in Northern Arizona—its ecological resilience and current economic vulnerability. He will then explore general tradeoffs between economic viability and ecological sustainability in current efforts to build more equitable and less fossil-fuel dependent food systems. He will conclude by exploring how the work of The Land Institute that is focused on developing perennial grain polycultures, fits into a larger food system transformation that is both possible and necessary.
