Malik Yakini to Deliver MLK Keynote

Malik Yakini, a long-time partner of the Sustainable Food Systems Initiative (SFSI) and the co-founder and Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN), will be delivering one of the keynotes of the University of Michigan MLK Jr. Symposium. Yakini co-led the Food Literacy for All course during the 2017 and 2018 winter semesters and has hosted University of Michigan interns each year since 2017 through grants secured by SFSI. You can learn more about the incredible work he is doing in his biography below and at the DBCFSN website here.

Malik Kenyatta Yakini is co-founder and Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN). DBCFSN operates a seven-acre urban farm and is spearheading the opening of the Detroit People’s Food Co-op, a cooperatively grocery story in Detroit’s North End. Yakini views the work of DBCFSN as part of the larger movement for building power, self-determination, and justice. He is adamantly opposed to the system of white supremacy, capitalism and patriarchy. He has an intense interest in contributing to the development of an international food sovereignty movement that embraces Black communities in the Americas, the Caribbean and Africa. He is a co-founder of the National Black Food and Justice Alliance.

The MLK Jr. Symposium will take place virtually on January 18, 2021. Yakini will deliver the keynote address between 10 – 11:30 am. More information about the MLK Symposium can be found here.
