Cairo-Michigan Partnership

Public Humanities in Egypt and the Global South

The University of Michigan and the American University in Cairo (AUC) embarked on a collaborative project on Public Humanities supported by a Grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at AUC this initiative aims at:

  • Expanding Michigan’s Global South outreach in the Middle East, and AUC’s networks;
  • Creating an intellectual space to discuss and rethink contemporary social problems and critical theories in and about the Global South in English as well as in non-European Languages;
  • Sharing and exchanging expertise and experiences between the two institutions, their faculties, and students..

We achieve these goals through faculty exchanges between both campuses and joint events between the  Global Theories of Critique Reading Group at Michigan and the HUSSLab at AUC.
