SUMMARY: The Witness assisted in evacuating civilians by car from Berdyansk to Zaporizhzhia and in bringing humanitarian aid to Berdyansk. On July 6, 2022, the Witness was detained by Russian forces at a checkpoint and then held for 44 days in the Berdyansk police station. While imprisoned, at times in solitary confinement, he was interrogated, beaten, tortured, and denied medical assistance.

The Witness of the incident was a male civilian and resident of Berdyansk in his late 40s who worked as a builder before the war. The Witness also engaged in volunteer activities during the war.
